Visualising shipping traffic in the Baltic Sea

This mesmerising animation by Lauri Vanhala is mostly an environmental statement. Do we indeed control all risks associated with the rise of international traffic over water and are we prepared for the impact a disaster has on the environments.

The story of the danger of collisions and pollution is made extremely powerful by combining the dataset of one day of shipping traffic.

I don’t think a table with a summary of ship traffic, collisions and pollutions on the Baltic Sea would have the same impact.

The video is a result of an unofficial visualization technology preview made originally for HELCOM (Baltic Marine Environment Protection Comission).
